Janelle Warhurst — Two poems

Telendos and Kalymnos

Ancient ruins covered in yellow daisies and bright red poppies

encrypt the centuries old Byzantine church.

Celebrating Vasiliou visitors to Telendos bask in the glory

of a prince and princess who swam to their fate for love.

Deep in the cerulean sea between Kalymnos and Telendos lies

a lost and sunken city dwarfed by monoliths and azure blue skies.

Blackened rocks leave traces of an earthquake long ago.

Gorge of Vathy

Beautiful sweeping coastlines

Dwarfed by rocks of limestone

Caves for the rock climbers where the ultramarine water

gives safe landing (without ropes)

Pruning the trees so that juicy mandarins

can be ready for summer thirsts.
