Helen Wyatt and Lesley Walker — A Collage of Sponges

In a sack it lies inert, a flat bile-coloured slab, dirty, drab, crusty, desiccated as death.

In sea water suddenly it grows, flat becomes round, edges become curves, greedy for the moisture it sucks into itself.

From Potassium Manganate it emerges as if sated with deep red wine or blood, dripping crimson on the flagstone floor.

In Hydrogen Peroxide it bleaches and turns pale, butter-coloured, something beautiful and useful, for a price.
